- “To be a Christian without prayer is no more possible than to be alive without breathing.”
- Martin Luther
In today’s modern world, it is sometimes hard for us to realize the power of prayer. Man has accomplished so much that we often seek solutions to life’s problems in the natural realm before turning to God. But prayer is powerful, and no one can predict how it works. Since we cannot estimate what prayer can do, we should not hesitate to commit all matters to God in prayer.
- “We all believe that prayer has the potency to change things, but not all of us have the persistence to pray until things are changed.”
- Anonymous
Prayer is a spiritual loaded with spiritual results. Men who carry the identity of prayer are earth-shakers and attention-commanding individuals. They partner with God to bring the order of heaven to earth. No wonder the Queen of England once said, “I fear the prayers of John Knox more than the entire army of England.”
Some of the wonders of prayer are found in our text, 2 Kings 20:1–6. Hezekiah turned a terrible situation into a testimony through the power of prevailing prayer. It amazes me every time I read this passage how wonderful prayer can be.
- PRAYER CONNECTS MAN TO GOD
“Then he turned his face to the wall and prayed unto the Lord.” — 2 Kings 20:2
The first wonder of prayer is its power to connect man to God.
- “Prayer is the world’s greatest wireless connection.”
— Anonymous
Hezekiah was an ordinary man who, through prayer, connected with an extraordinary God. In prayer, a mortal man fellowships with the immortal God. It doesn’t matter who you are or where you may be, a sincere prayer brings you into the very presence of God.
- “True prayer is neither a mere mental exercise nor a vocal performance. It is far deeper than that — it is a spiritual transaction with the Creator of heaven and earth.”
- Charles Spurgeon
- PRAYER CHANGES THINGS FOR THE BETTER
“Turn again, and tell Hezekiah the captain of my people, ‘Thus saith the Lord, the God of David thy father: I have heard thy prayer, I have seen thy tears: behold, I will heal thee. On the third day thou shalt go up unto the house of the Lord.’” — 2 Kings 20:5
Prayer is as powerful as God. It can change anything — and anyone. Scripture is filled with wonders wrought through prayer:
• Moses prayed, and God changed His mind (Exodus 32:11–14)
• Joshua prayed, and God made the sun stand still (Joshua 10:12–13)
• Hannah prayed, and God opened her womb (1 Samuel 1:27)
• Elijah prayed, and God sent rain (James 5:16–18)
• David prayed, and God stopped the plague (2 Samuel 24:25)
• Jesus prayed, and God raised Lazarus from the dead (John 11:41–44)
- “Prayer changes things. Prayer changes us. Prayer changes life. Sometimes, an event has already manifested that needs to be stopped. Don’t just pray when you’re in trouble — pray every day. Surround yourself with prayer. You never know when you might need an extra miracle.”

- PRAYER GIVES MAN UNCOMMON MIRACLES
“And I will add unto thy days fifteen years; and I will deliver thee and this city out of the hand of the king of Assyria; and I will defend this city for mine own sake, and for my servant David’s sake.” — 2 Kings 20:6
Unbelievable! Hezekiah prayed, and God added fifteen years to his life — what an uncommon wonder!
- “Prayer is the exercise of drawing on the grace of God.”
— Oswald Chambers
One of the major wonders of prayer is that it brings about uncommon miracles. Through prayer, Hezekiah received a miracle of extended life. Until you begin to pray, you may merely be existing, not truly living. A praying man is a living man. Jesus said, “I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.” (John 10:10).
A simple prayer to God for salvation will not just add years to your life but will grant you everlasting life. These are the wonders of prayer. Pray to God, and receive life eternal!
- “Brilliance without prayer is like a car with four flat tires. It might be a truly fine vehicle, but it’s not going anywhere.”
- Craig D. Louisburg
