Introduction
The Resurrection is Our Living Hope
1 Corinthians 15:17; Romans 4:25
The resurrection of Jesus Christ is more than a historical fact, it is the heartbeat of the Christian faith. Without it, the cross would be just another tragic death, and our faith would be empty. But because Jesus rose, everything He said and did has eternal weight. His resurrection is proof that death could not defeat Him, sin could not conquer Him, and the grave could not hold Him. He did not die as a victim—He died as a victor.
A) Theories That Deny Jesus Resurrection
Matthew 28:11–15
Despite the overwhelming evidence, many false theories have been presented to deny the resurrection of Jesus Christ. These are humans’ efforts and attempts to suppress the truth.
- The Exchange Theory.
Refuted by: John 19:16–18; Luke 23:26–49
This theory suggests someone else died in Jesus’ place. But eyewitness accounts confirm Jesus was crucified. His mother, His disciples, the soldiers, and the crowds all witnessed His death.
- The Swoon Theory.
Refuted by: John 19:33–35
This theory claims Jesus fainted and was later revived in the tomb. But the Roman executioners confirmed His death by piercing His side. And also no man could endure such torture, roll away a sealed stone, escape Roman guards, and appear triumphant. It’s more logical to believe in the miracle than this myth.
- The Hallucination (Shock) Theory.
Refuted by: Luke 24:36–43; 1 Corinthians 15:6
This theory assumes the disciples only imagined seeing Jesus. But He appeared multiple times, spoke, ate, and allowed Himself to be touched. Hallucinations don’t happen to over 500 people at once.
- The Stolen Body Theory.
Refuted by: Matthew 28:1–15
This theory claims the disciples stole His body. But they were hiding in fear, and the tomb was guarded. If it were a lie, why would they suffer and die for it? People don’t die for what they know is false.
B) Evidence for Jesus’ Resurrection
- Jesus Predicted His Resurrection
Matthew 16:21; Mark 9:31
Jesus foretold His death and resurrection. Even His enemies remembered this and tried to stop it (Matthew 27:62–66), but His words came true, just as He promised.
- Post-Resurrection Appearances
Luke 24:13–43; John 20:14–29; 1 Corinthians 15:5–7
Jesus appeared to Mary, the disciples, and over 500 people. These were not vague visions; they were real encounters with a risen Saviour.
- Transformation of the Disciples
Acts 4:13; Acts 5:29–32
The same disciples who fled in fear became bold proclaimers of Christ. They faced persecution and death without denying the resurrection because they had seen the risen Lord.
- Birth and Growth of the Church
Acts 2:41–47
The resurrection sparked a spiritual revolution. Thousands believed, and the church grew across nations and centuries, all rooted in a risen Christ.
- Ongoing Testimony of Changed Lives
2 Corinthians 5:17; Galatians 2:20
From the early church to today, the resurrection power of Jesus continues to transform lives. He still saves, heals, restores, and gives purpose.
C) The Significance of Jesus Resurrection.
Jesus’ resurrection is the power for today and hope for tomorrow.
- It Confirms Jesus as the Son of God
Romans 1:4
The resurrection declares Jesus with power to be the Son of God. He is not just a prophet or teacher, He is the Lord of all.
- It Secures Our Forgiveness and Salvation
1 Corinthians 15:17; Romans 4:25
Without the resurrection, we are still in our sins. But because He lives, we are forgiven, justified, and given eternal life.
- It Guarantees Our Victory Over Death
Romans 6:9; 1 Corinthians 15:55–57; Ephesians 2:6
Jesus conquered death once and for all. His resurrection assures us of our future resurrection. We are no longer slaves to fear or death.
- It Seals the Defeat of Satan
Colossians 2:15; Hebrews 2:14–15
At the cross and through the resurrection, Jesus disarmed the devil and triumphed over him. “We fight from victory and not for victory.”
Conclusion
The Resurrection Demands a Response
Acts 4:12; John 14:6; Acts 2:21; Philippians 2:9–11; John 14:1–3
The resurrection is not just history—it is an invitation. Jesus alone can save. He alone is the way to the Father. His name is above every name. If you believe in Him, you will be saved. And He is coming again to take His people home.
What will you do with this truth?
Will you ignore it like the soldiers who were bribed to lie?
Will you doubt it like Thomas once did?
Or will you believe and worship like Mary and the disciples?
Because He lives, you can live also.
Because He won, you can walk in victory.
The tomb is empty, our hope is alive!
Happy Easter Sunday!
